J.J. Abrams back in the ‘Star Wars’ saddle…..

Colin Trevorrow out. J.J. Abrams in. Yes, Mr. Abrams will be returning for one more romp as a director in the ‘Star Wars’ universe to which he’ll be writing and directing the untitled ‘Episode IX.’

One thing about this that should be no surprise here, the Lucasfilm President who’s now fired three directors up until now, Kathleen Kennedy, is overjoyed knowing Abrams is back: With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy, said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy in a statement.

This shouldn’t change the fact that working for Disney/Lucasfilm as a director sounds like a very suffocating environment for directors that want to inject their own sense of creativity and paw prints on the Star Wars series of films. Not even counting the three previous directors that have been fired from past productions, it can be argued that Kennedy technically replaced Gareth Edwards on ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,’ after she’d brought in others to finish extensive re-shoots on that production.

Regardless, let’s first see how ‘The Last Jedi,’ due in theaters December 16th, written and directed by Rian Johnson, plays itself out. Will it be formulaic like Abram’s ‘The Force Awakens’ was? Or will it bring the new series of films into fresh territory? Nuff said.
