Tony Award winning powerhouse Jennifer Holliday is joining the cast of The Color Purple!

Holliday became a Broadway legend after her performance as Effie in the original production of Dreamgirls. I can’t listen to her without getting chills.

The actress will take over the part of Shug Avery in the current revival. The role was first played by Jennifer Hudson and now Heather Headley.

Shug Avery is a nightclub singer in The Color Purple, a musical adapted from the Alice Walker novel of the same name. Holliday will step into the role on Oct. 4, succeeding Heather Headley, who has been playing Shug Avery since May 10; her final performance will be Oct. 2.

Holliday won her Tony in 1982. Her performance at the 1982 Tonys is often described as one of the best in history.
