Meryl Streep has been nominated for her 18th Oscar playing Violet Weston, an angry woman suffering from oral Cancer, in the dark comedy August: Osage County.

August: Osage County is based on the play of the same name by Tracy Letts, and won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2008. It is an ensemble film also starring Julia Roberts (nominated for Best Supporting Actress), Juliette Lewis, Delmot Mulroney, Ewan MacGregor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Cooper, Sam Shepard, Abigail Breslin and Julianne Nicholson.

Meryl Streep has been nominated an astounding 18 times for an Academy Award, the most in history, as well as 28 Golden Globe nominations, also the most in history. She began her theatrical career after graduating Vassar College and attending Yale School of Drama. Her second film The Deer Hunter (1978) brought high praise and by the following year she won her first Oscar as Best Supporting Actress in Kramer vs. Kramer opposite Dustin Hoffman. In 1982 she won her first Best Actress Oscar for playing Sophie in the Nazi war drama Sophie’s Choice.

Immensely popular and considered America’s greatest actress, Meryl has starred in dozens of commercially successful films including: Silkwood, Out of Africa, The Bridges of Madison County, The Devil Wears Prada and The Iron Lady. Her profound portrayal of Margaret Thatcher won her the Best Actress Oscar (her second).

Meryl’s first true romance was with actor John Cazale who played with her in the Deer Hunter and was immortalized as ‘Fredo’ in The Godfather. John tragically died of Cancer in 1978 with Meryl by his side. She found love again with sculptor John Gummer. They married in 1978 and have four children.
