Acclaimed director Lee plans his documentary on the late, great Michael Jackson just in time for the 25th anniversary of his album Bad.

“We have footage in this documentary that no one’s ever seen, stuff that Michael shot himself, behind-the-scenes stuff,” he said in an interview with a href=”http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/tv-film/spike-lee-preparing-michael-jackson-documentary-1007538952.story” target=”_blank”>Billboard.”We had complete access to the vaults of Michael Jackson. … He wrote 60 demos for the Bad record. Only 11 made it. So we got to hear a lot of that stuff, too, so it was just a great experience.”

Cited as one of the most sold records of all time, Bad is set to be rereleased with extras on September 18.

Additionally, Lee readies his annual birthday homage to the king (who would be 54 this year) at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park on August 25.
