The popular marvel series and highly publicized and anticipated blockbuster did not disappointed studio execs or viewers. Previously holding the the greatest opening week was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 at approximately 179 million. Avengers brought down the house raking in 207.4 million dollars.

But the questioned posed by Entertainment Weekly is, does simply being the highest number make it a most powerful opener of all time? They take into account steadily rising ticket prices as well as the integration of IMAX and 3D screens. The conclusion they come to is that, “the Return of the Jedi in 1983: it earned only $23.0 million in its opening frame, but that was nearly $8 million more — or 60.4 percent more — than the previous record-holder, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” This was the highest discrepancy they came across, while The Avengers out did Harry Potter by only 22.6 percent.
