Turmoil in Paramount’s 170 Million Dollar Movie: “World War Z”

Special Correspondent: James Jewett

Paramount has put into production an zombie apocalypse movie based on the books by Max Brooks and the movie itself being overrun with problems from the minor to the unusual. The money put into this movie already tallies up to $170 million and there are at least 5 weeks of re-shooting needed. Brad Pitt is on the project as an actor and more importantly a producer who is livid with all hurdles being thrown his way. The movie is planned to evolve into a trilogy of blockbusters as well as, “a Trojan horse for sociopolitical problems, and what would the effect on the world be if everything we knew was upside-down and pulled out from under us,” said Pitt reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Starting with the minor problems, as of the start of shooting, Director of the latest James Bond film Quantum of Solace, Marc Forster and his team hadn’t made a decision as elementary as how the zombies in the movie would move. People investing in the movie were seeing their money vanish and began to doubt Pitt’s decision to bring on a director who has little experience in large scale action and war film.

Now for the major problems. The atmosphere on set is volatile. Marc Forster’s indecision means the crew is heading into World War Z without a commander. The secondary production unit including; line producer Colin Wilson (Avatar) and Oscar-winning effects man John Nelson (Gladiator), were brought on and now asked to leave. Also three time Oscar winning cinematographer, Robert Richardson has been asked to leave the set on several occasions.

Finally the unusual. Now with production and progress of the film where it was, it could accurately be called a powder cake waiting to erupt. That’s when the Hungarian anti-terrorism unit made their raid on World War Z . The October operation successfully raided a warehouse, in Budapest, holding 85 fully functional assault rifles to be used in the film.

Despite all the set backs Paramount film group president Adam Goodman tells The Hollywood Reporter, “Getting the ending correct is essential, and we are in that creative process. World War Z is a giant summer movie and we are confident it will be a global hit when it’s released June 2013.”

A train wreck? Perhaps not as they have crowds upon crowds of extras and a very talented young man who you can watch turn into zombie before the editors spice it up with effects. Check it out
