William Shatner to return as Captain Kirk! (All but a done deal)

The 50th Anniversary of the Star Trek franchise will hit in 2016, and so will another Star Trek film. The 3rd movie in the rebooted JJ Abram’s produced series of Trek films will apparently have one key cog back in the fold: William Shatner

A lot of chatter has been occurring via Twitter the past week from Shatner himself, and the Star Trek 3’s director, Roberto Orci. However, today truly marked the turning point to where the chance for Shatner to return to Star Trek went from speculative to all but a done deal. Here are some of the remarks from Shatner, and Orci:

Shatner (care of UK’s Daily Mail)- “Here’s my dilemma, I was cautioned not to speak about this and the next day it was out all over Twitter. ‘So I talked about it and then I get another phone call telling me to keep quiet again! All I can say is that I’m very excited about the film.

Add to it, Bad Robot Productions, who have produced the new Trek films and the upcoming Star Wars film, make it a point to tell their actors the only thing they’re allowed to say is: “All I can say is that I’m very excited about the film.” Right, like I said, this is all but a done deal, or more likely is a done deal behind the scenes. That being said, here’s what the film’s director, Bob Orci, had to say on Twitter today regarding Shatner appearing in Star Trek 3 (2.0): boborci – September 28, 2014[@Ralph Pinheiro]. exactly. I would never waste my hero’s time. Must be worthy of them if you’re gonna go for it.

So there you have it Trekkies, I don’t think there’s much left to the imagination here, barring something tragic (knock on wood of course), William freaking Shatner will return to Star Trek, alongside his old buddy, Leonard Nimoy, reprising his role in the 3rd Abram’s produced Trek film as the prime timeline Spock.

Is this a good thing? Do you think it may detract from the hard work actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana and co. have invested in the roles as the younger cast? Me personally, I think the young actors have such busy careers going now that they’re more likely to feel relieved the veterans of Shatner, and Nimoy are coming back. They probably know this is the last film they’ll be apart of for the rebooted franchise, and so what does it matter if they share the spotlight with two actors who made Star Trek kick ass from day one?

Now, to get everyone’s adrenaline pumping for the return of Bill Shatner to the role of Kirk, let me offer up this clip, from one of the lesser revered old Trek films, where “The Shat”, gets to kick some ass on the planet Nimbus 3 in 1989’s Star Trek V: The Final Frontier:

As always, stay tuned for more updates on this continuing story, and most of all, thanks for reading!
