Wonder Woman Production Schedule and Plot Details Revealed

Gal Gadot

At long last, more details on the upcoming “Wonder Woman” film are finally starting to trickle out. We’ve known for a while that Gal Gadot will play the titular heroine and that she’s set to make her big-screen splash in Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Now we’ve been treated to a few more details concerning the plot in addition to the low down on the other films in the planned trilogy.

Filming for the Amazonian’s solo outing is set to begin this fall in advance of a planned 2017 release. “Wonder Woman” will be the first superhero film to have a woman as the lead role and will beat the first female-led blockbuster by Marvel, “Captain Marvel,” by more than a year. DC Comics has been having a hard time lately on the progressive comics movement, so getting a girl-driven picture out first is a major coup for the company.

Additionally, a bit more has been revealed as to the film’s set-up and story. Screen Crush says the film will make use of the New 52 origin story in which Wonder Woman is the demigod daughter of Zeus who is hundreds of years old and was raised on the paradisal island of Themyscira. According to director Patty Jenkins, the film will start off on the Amazonian island where she will rescue military aircraft pilot Steve Trevor (played by Chris Pine, according to TheWrap.com. This will spark a romance between the two.

DC is gearing up for a large play for all of its marquee properties and is trying to increase awareness for its characters in any way it can, including video games. InterCasino.com has rolled out interactive games for much of the proposed Justice League roster in an attempt to drum up hype for the upcoming movies. The Wonder Woman game is surprisingly faithful to the character and even has you fight Ares, the Greek god of war, during the bonus round. In the comics, Ares brings down Steve Trevor’s plane, causing his fateful meeting with the Amazonian princess.

Many have criticized the glimpses of Gadot as Wonder Woman from the early “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” trailer based on the grim and gritty cinematography and color palette. However, given DC’s current penchant for dark tonality when it comes to its comic films—The Dark Knight trilogy, anyone?—we have a suspicion that this has more to do with the company’s handling of the character rather than a reflection of Gadot’s acting abilities.

“Wonder Woman” is currently planned for release on June 23, 2017 with filming is set to begin this fall. The third film to feature Wonder Woman, “Justice League,” begins filming in spring 2016 and will be released Nov. 17, 2017. “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” opens March 25, 2016 with “Suicide Squad” hot on its heels on Aug. 5, 2016.
