5 Seconds of Summer & Southern California Hospice Foundation Fulfill Patient’s Last Wish

I love these types of stories. It’s so important to use your fame or your platform to be there and help others.

Kelsey Blackham was only 19 when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Originally from Utah, the SoCal resident dreamt of meeting her favorite band, 5 Seconds of Summer. Southern California Hospice Foundation (SCHF) fulfilled Kelsey’s wish by coordinating a private meet-and-greet with the band at their recording studio in Los Angeles, Calif. at an exclusive rehearsal last week.

The Australian band invited Kelsey and three of her friends to see them rehearse on Wednesday, Aug. 7. The band spent a couple of hours with Kelsey, sharing words of encouragement and signing several specialty items including a Gibson guitar which was then gifted to her. Filled with love and hope, wheelchair-bound Kelsey stood from her wheelchair to take photos with the band.

Hospice has been very important to my family and myself. Both of my grandparents use Hospice towards the end of their lives. One of the ladies who was with us from the organization said, “You go out of this world, the way you lived.” My grandma was a fighter, so she wasn’t going out without a fight.

SCHF was established in 2002 to promote awareness of palliative care options for terminally ill children and adults. One of the many important programs SCHF offers is the Angel Assistance Program which helps to enhance the well-being of patients nearing end-of-life, with needs that lie outside of the hospice benefit, such as reuniting families, hosting special events, coordinating meet and greets with celebrities, and granting final wishes. The goal of the program is to offer patients and their families’ meaningful moments that will last a lifetime. For more information, visitwww.socalhospicefoundation.org.

Wishing Kelsey and her family all the best!
