DAVE CHAPPELLE’S BLOCK PARTY

Women Under The Influence (WUTI) & Crush Palace continues their Sounds of Summer film series at Exposition Park with the 15th anniversary of comedian Dave Chappelle’s Block Party. The 2005 documentary follows Chappelle’s efforts to host an impromptu Brooklyn block party featuring the most legendary artists of the day—resulting in life-affirming (and sometimes hilarious) moments. Legendary director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) helms the film with his signature originality and wit. This special event will feature a virtual introduction from Gondry, who will share his insight into the making of this cult classic. Attendees will experience an exciting, large-scale, picnic-style cinematic event in celebration of bringing people together around a shared love of music and culture.

Before the screening of the film, the Compton Centennial High School will perform a live marching band procession. The alma mater of Dr. Dreand Kendrick LamarCompton Centennial HS is now helping students fortify their futures through music. Under the guidance of Music Director Manuel Castaneda, Compton Centennial has diversified its curriculum with string orchestra, jazz band, concert band, and advanced-placement music theory. Donations from Sounds of Summer’s brand partners, including GoPuff and Diageo, will benefit the Compton Centennial Music Department.
The Sounds of Summer series is for everyone that has missed the experience of shared music, comedy, and cinema over the past year. Now that we can finally be in-person, Sounds of Summer aims to bring the finest musically driven, landmark cinema to screens for Los Angeles to celebrate together. Each Sounds of Summer event is set to be a unique experience with director conversations, featured talent, guest DJs, and unexpected happenings. 
Curated food, beverage, and alcohol concessions will be available exclusively through GoPuff during the screening series. Attendees can order via the GoPuff app or online at gopuff.com to pick up onsite in minutes. 
Fifteen percent of ticket sales and concession profits will benefit My Friend’s Place. For 33 years and counting, My Friend’s Place has been assisting and inspiring youth experiencing homelessness to build self-sufficient lives. From their early beginnings as a volunteer-based group to the dynamic resource center they operate today, My Friend’s Place offers a comprehensive continuum of services each year to nearly 1,200 youth experiencing homelessness between the ages of 12 and 25, and their children, helping them move toward wellness, stability and self-sufficiency.
