Storyteller’s Cottage will be hosting Douglas Wood as a workshop leader for their ‘Script to Screen’ Summit, where Doug will coach writer’s to ‘Explore Creativity Through Improvisation’.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Doug about his ‘Artists’ Playground’ and how he developed the process.

How do you assist writers in accessing their imaginations, embracing their intuitions, and to create from a space of freedom and spontaneity?

Douglas Wood. Improv is a tool. I developed a workshop that focuses less on performance, and more on the process. Unlike traditional Improv, where the goal is comedy, the workshop is designed to improve the skills necessary for successful writing:  intuition, spontaneity, concentration, being ‘in the moment’, self expression, communication, and the ability to access one’s intimate emotions and life experiences.

What is the purpose of Improv?

Douglas Wood. All artists need to be able to access their own personal muse (the one that dwells inside of them). After a decade of being a film and TV executive, I found myself yearning to be creative again, so I returned to my improvisation roots and my own writing.  I found that I was at my best when I was able to silence the inner left brain critic and allow the free-spirited right brain to be released and have fun.

Where have you taught ‘The Artist’s Playground’?

Douglas Wood. I’ve held workshops for the California Institute of the Arts, California State University at Northridge, CBS Diversity Writers Program, The Motion Picture Television Fund, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design (in Israel), AIA Actors Studio, and many more!

What’s next for Douglas Wood?

Douglas Wood.  A head writer gig on the upcoming new PBS series, “Molly of Denali“, an action-adventure comedy that follows the adventures of  resourceful 10-year-old Molly Mabray, an Alaska Native.
