It was great to speak with John about the craft of writing and filmmaking, his latest projects, and what lies ahead. Our interview reveals his passion for storytelling.

How do you get involved in storytelling?

John Bucher. It’s my wheelhouse.I was surrounded by writer’s and storyteller’s my entire life. I come from a family of writer’s. My Dad, John Bucher, Sr. is a poet.  His work is published in California Beat Poetry. I am interested in all aspects of the writing and execution of stories,  crafting something that honors people and the entirety or the human experience.

Would you say there is opportunity for writer’s today?

John Bucher. There has never been a better time to be a storyteller. There are more avenues opening than ever before. Technological advancements have also increased the demand for engaging and intriguing stories. One of my most popular books is, Storytelling For Virtual Reality.

Your latest book, A Best Practice Guide to Sex and Storytelling, is intriguing.

John Bucher. It’s funny, but when I pitched the concept to my publisher, his response was “I can’t believe this hasn’t been done before!” Sex is a natural part of humanity, it’s really where the rubber meets the road in storytelling. With the rise of the  ‘Me Too’ movement and LGBTQ, it’s important that writer’s and filmmakers address dignity for everyone in their stories.

Tell us a little bit about the new projects you are working on.

John Bucher. I have just finished producing a documentary pilot for a series titled, ‘Clowns: An Uphill Battle’. It’s a mockumentary – comedy. The larger idea behind the story is that a group of clowns are tired of the public image they currently endure, where nobody likes clowns. It’s about how the trickster is an important factor in society, it keeps us from taking ourselves too seriously and restores a sense of wonder. Next is ‘American Mythology’. It’s about the consciousness of community. Exploring myths still alive in North America, such as the ‘Money Myth’, and ‘Ownership Myth’, and the different factions of the ‘New God’s’. I’m also a producer on ‘Yoga Master’, It’s about time travel and going back in time. I’m always interested in alternate realities, they are what myths and legends are made of!

What’s next for John Bucher?

John Bucher. I’m so fortunate. After my workshops at the Storyteller’s ‘Script to Screen’ Summit, I will be traveling to speak in Ireland and Singapore!
