Recently married, AVERY (Helena Mattsson) finds out that her new husband, ALEX (Josh Kelly), has another wife. Devastated, Avery decides that the only decent thing to do is to inform the other wife, MELANIE (Briana Evigan), of Alex’s deception. But instead of being angry with Alex, motherless Melanie seeks to steal Avery’s son, Jack(played by Ethan J. Green and Oliver J. Green), and to eliminate the competition. “My Husband’s Secret Wife” premieres Sunday, August 19 at 8pm(ET/PT) on Lifetime.
My first question to Josh Kelly was: What was it like to play the scoundrel? His response reminded me of why I enjoy interviewing actors.
Josh Kelly. I always look to find the good in every character I play, a thread of being vulnerable, so that the audience can relate. Alex, the husband in Secret Wife is being manipulated, he’s got flaws and remorse, but deep down, he’s trying to make everybody happy.
Where did you shoot the film?
Josh Kelly. We shot in Louisville, Kentucky. It took a little over three weeks. The cast, including Helena Mattsson, who was so natural and super cool as the Mom, Briana Evigan and Sofia Mattsson were great to work with. Our director, Tamar Halpern was outstanding, and made the twins, newcomers Oliver J. Green and Ethan J. Green (who share being Avery’s son Jack and had to start off with some very emotional scenes), relaxed and confident.
Tell me a little about your acting background.
Josh Kelly. Well, believe it or not, I was the class clown. I was born in Japan, and lived in Maryland and Maine. I took a learn-as-you-go approach to acting. I knew I wanted to be an actor, but I joined the Army so I would have real life experience for action films. I like being physical, in action and humor. I took classes at Playhouse West and The Groundlings for Improv.
Who would you most like to work with in the industry?
Josh Kelly. Well, I really admire Emma Stone as an actress, I’m a fan. I think she really challenges herself and would be great to work with. I would love the opportunity to work with Tom Cruise and Dwayne Johnson doing an action film. They are the best in the business, their work ethics inspire me.
What’s next for Josh Kelly?
Josh Kelly. I’m playing an openly gay, demon- hunting cowboy, on NBC’s ‘Midnight, Texas‘. It’s a Supernatural Thriller inspired by the writings of Charlene Harris who wrote “The Southern Vampire Mysteries“, on which HBO’s ‘True Blood” was based. It’s got plenty of Angels, Vampires and Demons, so it’s wild and a lot of fun.
