Christian Bale is an English actor who, like fellow Oscar nominee for Best Actor – Chiwetal Ejiofor, got his first big screen break from Steven Spielberg, who in 1987 selected Christian from hundreds of other boys to star in Empire of the Sun.
Christian’s parents divorced when he was 16 and Christian moved to LA with his Dad. Christian sang and danced in the Disney musical Newsies, but came to prominence with his performance in American Psycho in the year 2000. Famous for transforming his physique to match his character, he startled fans with his 63 lb. weight loss to play The Machinist in 2004. Shortly after, in 2005 he went mainstream Hollywood as Batman in Batman Begins, followed by The Dark Knight in 2008 and The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.
In 2010 Christian went through another visual transformation playing Dicky Ecklund in David O. Russell’s The Fighter, with Mark Wahlberg. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as well as the Golden Globe and a SAG Award. Returning with David O. Russell for 2013 American Hustle, he again went through an amazing transformation, this time gaining over 50 lbs. for the role.
This is Christian Bale’s first nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. His co-stars Amy Adams has been nominated for Best Actress and both Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence have been nominated for Oscars in supporting roles.
An interesting fact, Gloria Steinem is Christian’s stepmother. I’m sure she’ll be watching the Academy Awards, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, Sunday, March 2.
