Interview with Cindy Busby

Speaking with Cindy Busby about playing the Mom in‘My Mom’s Letter From Heaven’.

What excited you about playing the role of the dying Mom in this film?

Cindy Busby. First, I jumped at the opportunity to work with Director Michael Scott. I have worked with him and his wife Barbara Fisher, (a producer on the film) previously and they are so much fun to work with. I was also moved by the beautiful story of ‘My Mom’s Letter From Heaven’. It is about humanity, loss, redemption and coming together. The one’s left behind usually have to pick up the pieces. It really draws the audience in and the actors needed to be raw and vulnerable.

You are a very busy girl! What do you do to relax?

Cindy Busby. I think it’s important to take time to experience life! I recently took a vacation to London and Stratford. I got to see a performance of Macbeth. It was the best play I have ever seen! I loved it. I’m from Montreal, so I like to visit my old friends there when I can. I kind of divide my time between Los Angeles and Vancouver, so I get the best of both worlds!

How do you keep in such great shape?

Cindy Busby. I’m not a gym person, I enjoy taking classes like Yoga and Pilates. I like to sweat and stay motivated physically. You have to have endurance as an actor. When you’re shooting a movie, sometimes you need to maintain high energy for 14 or more hours! Currently, I’m enjoying “Bunda”, it focuses on your butt and legs! It’s a work out!

You’ve worked with numerous great actors. What was it like working with Steve Martin?

Cindy Busby. I love comedy. I love being goofy and making people laugh. I think I get my comic timing from my Dad. I love the craft of acting and comedy. I will take any opportunity to meet new people and refine my acting skills. It keeps you ahead of the game.

What’s next for Cindy Busby?

Cindy Busby.  I am in the Hallmark Channel’s ‘Wedding March 5’ with Jack Wagner, Josie Bissett and Emily Tennant. Then you’ll be seeing me in ‘Web of Dreams’, based on the V.C. Andrews books, on Lifetime.  It’s a 1950’s period piece. I play a manipulative, narcissistic, antagonist, so I had a blast!  It’s directed by Mike Rohl and also stars Liam Hughes and Max Lloyd Jones.

Interview with Karen Holness about playing the woman who finds the letter in,  ‘My Mom’s Letter From Heaven’.

Were you instantly attracted to this script?

Karen Holness. Oh my, Yes! I was gripped before I finished the first ten pages! I love the storytelling process, especially stories that deeply touch people and even have the potential to change someone’s life.

What was it like shooting in Vancouver?

Karen Holness. I’m from Vancouver so it was like being home, especially the unexpected snowstorms! The cast was a dream to work with, everyone was passionate, on point, and dedicated to telling the best story possible. I had previously worked with Michael Scott on ‘Secret Millionaire’ and ‘Christmas on Holly Lane’ for Lifetime. I had also worked with Barbara Fisher, one of the producers on a brief series ‘Date my Dad’, for the UP Network.

I know you’re a Jazz singer. How do you fit that into your busy schedule?

Karen Holness. I started out pursuing singing and dancing. I attended a Performing Arts High school in Vancouver, and I ended up getting a singing and dancing part in the film ‘Chicago’. My band was the entertainment for a hotel in Vancouver for many years. I play a Diana Ross impersonator in ‘Always Be My Maybe’, soon to be released on Netflix, so it is a skill I am able to include in my acting roles whenever possible.

Tell me about ‘Make It Pop’.

Karen Holness.  That was a broad comedy series for Nickelodeon. I played Ms. Diona. I enjoy all niches of comedy.

What’s Next for Karen Holness?

Karen Holness. I mentioned the feature film ‘Always Be My Baby’ , showing on Netflix in May. It stars Alan Wong, Randall Parks, Keanu Reeves, Arci Munoz, Karan Soni, among others. I have another feature debuting soon ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain”, based on the best selling novel of the same name. It stars Milo Ventimiglia from ‘This is Us’. It’s a Drama with Comedic elements.

Libby Ash, (Cindy Busby, “Date My Dad”) wife to Connor (Barry Watson, “Hart of Dixie”) and devoted mother of a four-year-old daughter, Zoe, is dying.  She tells her husband to find love again – Zoe will need a mother.  She writes a letter to her daughter and asks Connor to give it to their daughter when he feels the time is right.  He puts the letter in Zoe’s favorite children’s book.

Twelve years later, Zoe (Jordyn Ashley Olson) is an angry and rebellious 16-year-old.  She is jealous that her father is dating a woman, Rachel, (Anita Brown) and she is not willing to share her father with anyone.  She has begun dating an older boy who Connor has not met.  One day Zoe goes looking for some of her childhood things, especially her books, to remember her mother.  When she finds out Connor gave them to charity, she is furious and slams out of the house.

When Zoe discovers she is pregnant and that Connor is considering having Rachel move in, she packs a backpack and runs away.  She goes to visit her mother’s grave and heads to the library to look for a copy of her favorite childhood book, When You Wish Upon a Moon.

Connor is distraught and contacts the police.  They find Zoe’s boyfriend but he tells them they broke up.  All Connor wants is his daughter back and a chance to make things right.

Maggie Malone (Karen Holness, “The 100”) owns a book store that specializes in old books. She finds a tattered copy of When You Wish Upon a Moon and is surprised to find a letter inside. She is deeply moved by the letter from a dying mother to her daughter and decides to try and find Zoe and give it to her.

When Maggie tells her friend, Alex, (Jaime Callica) a minister, about the letter, he tells her he knows Zoe’s father and immediately calls Connor.  He sends a video message to Zoe’s phone telling her about the discovery and the address of the bookstore.  Zoe shows up and is overcome with emotion when she reads the letter from her mother.

Zoe shares the letter with Connor and he promises to make changes in both their lives.  It seems the love of a dying mother has brought them back together.
