Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow graces the June issue of Country Living—along with her rescue dog, Benji—and opens the doors to her 50-acre Nashville property—which includes a house, a church, and a barn—to take readers on a tour filled with unexpected finds from a lifetime of junking.

The second annual country music themed issue hits stands on May 17 and also features artists including Carrie Underwood, Trisha Yearwood, Kacey Musgraves and Holly Williams.

Sheryl opens up about life in Nashville, what she loves about her house and what inspires her home décor choices. “When I bought this property, I thought it would be nice to have a space that has nothing to do with work—just a quiet and sacred place to gather.”

Sheryl’s show stopping barn, which also doubles as a recording studio: When the barn was in the design stage, Sheryl planned to have a simple writing room upstairs, but once the room was soundproofed, it became a full-blown studio. “It’s ideal because I’m a single mom—I can go to work just down the driveway.” Sheryl has recorded her last two albums,  Feels Like Home and 100 Miles from Memphis, in her home studio, and all the guitars are playable, including a very special one—the “money maker”—that she’s used to write every hit of her career. (She’s had 31 of them, but who’s counting?)

Sheryl’s always on the hunt for old signage: “We’ve gotten away from using our hands and expressing ourselves through art,” she says. “I love that people at one time made their own advertising.”

Sheryl on what inspires her décor choices: “I’ve always loved old stuff. I got my love of antiquing—we called it junking— from my mom. I like the idea of people congregating around old objects and having conversations through the years.” Her only rule: “I just buy what I love.”

Some of the features from the second annual “Turn Up the Country” issue include:

  • Carrie Underwood—My Kind of Country:  Carrie shares a round-up of her favorite country picks and what she’s working on now: “My husband, Mike [Fisher], and I are designing our ‘forever’ home. My must-haves are a wood-burning fireplace, a porch swing, and rocking chairs.”
  • Trisha Yearwood—A Day in the Life: When Trisha isn’t recording, filming her Food Network show “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen” or co-headlining a tour with hubby Garth Brooks, you can find her at home in Nashville. She shares a typical day-in-the-life, including the recipe for her prized apple pie and why she and Garth always make time for dinner: “Even if we’re in the studio, Garth and I will still try to eat by 6 or 7. And if we host company, I don’t go over the top. For example, I don’t do tablecloths—we spent 14 years living in Oklahoma, and the wind was always blowing them. And I’m a big believer that food should be the centerpiece. But I like a real plate—white is always nice—and cloth napkins because they’re sturdier.”
  • Kacey Musgraves—Backyard Birthday Tea Party: Kacey’s Nashville backyard was transformed into what Kacey describes as an “Alice in Wonderlandesque garden party” thanks to twinkling lights, festive garlands and balloons, and a dance floor. Guests nibbled on macarons and sipped cherry limeade and came dressed to impress. “Hats were an absolute must. The bigger, the better,” says Kacey.
  • Holly Williams’—Makeover Takeover: In this year’s installment of our makeover series, Country Living readers are helping singer-songwriter Holly Williams, daughter of Hank Williams, Jr., transform her tattered Tennessee fixer-upper (purchased on Craig’s list!) by voting on major design elements. First up: The exterior and master bedroom are revealed.
