SPECTRE- Review…

The Good- A true return to classic Bond roots with a proper henchmen, beautiful Bond girls, epic car chases; along with many other memorable elaborate action sequences, a subtle yet wack-job villain, and overall it felt like the feel of the film was more akin to past incarnations of Bond flicks that had more of a lighthearted charm about them. No doubt, this was the closest we’ll probably ever see a Daniel Craig Bond flick feel more like something out of the Roger Moore/Sean Connery era. It wasn’t perfect, it had plot holes galore, but was a fun escape at the movies for my money!

The Bad- Although I can safely say Spectre was vastly superior to its predecessor, Skyfall, I still had a difficult time understanding the creative decision to end the story in England. It almost felt like this movie had an extra ending or two to it, and could have just wrapped up at the villain’s lair, but kept on trekkin. And yet instead of rounding out in an exotic locale it returned to the dark, dreary backdrop of England. That makes two Sam Mendes Bond films in a row that insisted on the film’s climax being set against as depressing a mise en scene as you can get! Oh well, can’t win em all..

The Ugly- The opening theme song that was sung by Sam Smith was a poor fit for this film in my humble opinion. Seriously, where is Tom Jones or Paul McCartney and Wings when you need them?! For such a tough, gritty 007 film, this one begged to have a song that backed up the film’s aura. More importantly, it sounded pretty much like the film’s composer, Thomas Newman, essentially recycled the majority of his Skyfall score for this entry and I wasn’t impressed. If the composer isn’t willing to come up with some distinctively new themes for the new film that’s been 3 years in the making then fire him. Where’s David Arnold when you need him? For the two entries Arnold scored for the Daniel Craig era he managed to make both scores sound very unique. In the end, an awkward theme song, and an absolute repeat and abysmal score from Newman really hurt my view of the film overall.

3 out of 4 stars

— For old time’s sake, here’s a clip of what a decent 007 theme song is supposed to sound like….Cheers!
