The Get Down: Baz Luhrmann’s 70s NYC Music Show Gets Full Trailer

Netflix has released a full trailer for The Get Down, Baz Luhrmann’s musical take on the rise of hip-hop during the 70’s in New York.

The first trailer I saw gave me chills. Baz’s Moulin Rouge is one of my favorites. Six of 13 episodes will be premiering Friday, August 12th. The Get Down is described “a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to a new art form,” chronicling the rise of hip-hop and the last days of disco — as told through the lives, music, art and dance of the South Bronx kids who would change the world forever.

The cast includes Shameik Moore (playing Shaolin Fantastic), Justice Smith (Ezekiel “Books” Figuero), Herizen Guardiola (Mylene Cruz), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Cadillac), Jaden Smith (Dizzee Kipling), Skylan Brooks (Ra-Ra Kipling), Tremaine Brown Jr. (Boo Boo Kiping), Mamoudou Athie (Grandmaster Flash), Sons of Anarchy’s Jimmy Smits (Francisco “Papa Fuerte” Cruz) and Revolution‘s Giancarlo Esposito (Ramon Cruz).
