Vintage TV- A shoutout to the kids of the 80s and 90s

Retro TV

As a child I got lost in TV. It made me so happy. I would run home from school and watch the after school specials and of course Oprah. There was something magical about TV in the 80’s and 90’s.

My friends and I still talk about it today. We talk about the TV shows back then like they were our friend. For most of us we would gather around on a Friday night and watch TGIF on ABC. That happens so rarely now.

I think when you hit a certain age you become very nostalgic about things. For some reason I have been thinking a lot about the toys I grew up with like Teddy Ruxpin, Tamagotchis, the skip-it and my favorite shows.

I figured if I’m feeling nostalgic I can’t be the only one. I had to put something out there to share my memories and see what yours are too.

The Cosby Show:

One of my favorite shows had to be The Cosby Show. Every episode was hysterical. The show still runs on TV and reaches new audiences every day.

It is mind boggling to me why Phylicia Rashad never won an Emmy Award for her role as Clair Huxtable. Who didn’t want them to be your parents? I loved it when she went off on the kids and Elvin.

Here is one of my favorite moments from The Cosby Show:

Saved by the Bell:

It’s so rare now to have a theme song. When the theme song came on for Saved by the Bell I think everyone knew it or at least parts of it. This was the group most people wanted to be a part of. So many girls wanted to date Zack Morris and who didn’t want that phone at that time. We knew the jock, the prep, the popular cheerleader, the nerd, the material girl and of course the Principle. Sing it with me, “It’s alright cuz I was saved by the bell!”

90210:

This show was a sensation! There had been nothing like it, that I had seen. It seemed like everyone was watching it. All the guys watched for the girls and the girls for the guys. I was very young when the show started. It was so funny being around 6 years old and talking about Brenda and Dylan. I had all the merchandise from the show: the sleeping bag, the dolls, perfume, posters, whatever I could get my hands on. They were the popular high school students in rich Beverly Hills. If you watched this show you were a part of the 90210 Era. I wear my badge proudly.

Friends:

Six friends we all wanted to have and be. I even had the Rachel haircut. Rachel and Ross were the ultimate couple. We all wanted them to be together. Who didn’t want a pal like Joey who would flirt with you but protect you. I always wondered if these people actually worked. They were always at the coffee shop all day every day. I literally grew up on this show from 10 to 20 years old.

Boy Meets World:

Cory and Topanga words that meant so much to so many kids. Cory and Shawn got into crazy situations every week and Mr. Feeny gave the best advice. This show was about friendship. Easy, simple but yet so catchy.

Full House:

Full House was filled with teachable moments. A father who lost his wife and was raising his kids with his brother-in-law and best friend Joey. Now I look back at the show as pretty corny but as a kid I couldn’t get enough of this family.

The Nanny:

Mr. Sheffield!!! Words heard loudly coming out of your TV weekly. I still crack up watching re-runs of this show. It was great until the last season or so. Fran would always get herself into trouble with the kids. I would have loved a nanny that would take me shopping and get me into things I shouldn’t.

One of my favorite moments:

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air:

Fresh Prince gave a fresh look on TV. It was up to the times. Will Smith was new to the scene. Who didn’t love that Carlton dance? DJ Jazzy Jeff getting thrown out of the house. The show keeps running and never gets old and neither does the theme song!

There are so many more including Designing Women, The Golden Girls, Fraggle Rock, Growing Pains, Cheers, Who’s the Boss, Hey Dude, Roseanne and The Wonder Years.

The list goes on and on. There was just something about this era. Yes, there is good TV now no doubt but we will never get back 80s and 90s television.

What were some of your favorite shows?
