Star Trek 3 has new writers….

Simon-Pegg

The saga continues. That is the saga of Paramount Pictures dragging their feet on just about everything related to getting their tent-pole franchise up and running again by Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary in 2016.

However, in a new development, actor Simon Pegg (who plays Scotty in the new Trek movies), and writer Doug Jung (created the TNT series Dark Blue) have been tasked by the brass at Paramount to write the third of the rebooted Trek films. That’s right, Scotty is going to have to save this franchise at the end of the day from missing an important summer 2016 release date!

Now, I’m almost positive this will leave most die-hard Trekkies at a loss for words as nor Pegg or Jung have extensive experience at writing a big summer blockbuster, let alone within the sci-fi genre. No discredit to Pegg (or Jung) who has helped write some previously outstanding comedies like Shaun of the Dead, Hott-Fuzz, and The World’s End, but this just seems a little too late in the game for Paramount to make such a change. Regardless, maybe Pegg can pull this off and write one hell of a Trek film…

All that being said, Paramount has no idea what they’re doing with this franchise in my opinion. It has Star Wars and Marvel Universe potential for spin-offs, and marketing merchandise (video games, toys, etc) and yet Paramount Pictures basically treats it like a girlfriend they’re embarrassed of. Add to it, the announcement of Jung to be co-writer with Pegg was made off of Jung’s brothers Twitter page. Like come on Paramount, at least hold some sort of a press conference and show the world you have a real plan to get the third film out in time for the big 50th anniversary. Make no mistake, Star Trek is a first class franchise that is unfortunately being driven into the ground like it’s some crappy blue Chevy Nova (with Axel Foley driving)

Nonetheless, we will see soon enough if the Pegg/Jung screenplay gets finished in time so cameras can roll before it’s too late to make the proposed summer 2016 release window. Rest assure, we’ll keep you Trekkies posted! Nuff said.
