Better Call Saul–A mistake?

Bob Odenkirk

Could the spin-off series to Breaking Bad entitled Better Call Saul be a mistake? Series creator Vince Gilligan is pondering this himself as the show is due to premiere on AMC in November of this year.

During a recent roundtable discussion he (Gilligan) was asked if he thinks the new series will be a hit or a flop? “Honestly, I don’t know yet.” quipped Gilligan, and then went onto say:

“If it’s After M*A*SH rather than Frasier, it won’t be for lack of hard work and wishful thinking and a lot of smart people doing their best,” Gilligan continued, “but you just don’t know until the world takes it.” Gilligan also remarked that production was a week behind schedule and that, perhaps by the end of this week, it would be two weeks behind. “I am worried that…it may turn out that this was a mistake,” he said.

Now, to provide some context to these remarks, Gilligan has always been quite the humble cynic when it comes to the success he’s had.  So with that, this could just be Vince being Vince and in reality his new spin-off series may in fact prove to be a winner.

My question is, can a show that features a character that was primarily in a supporting role on Breaking Bad, carry his own show? Bob Odenkirk (Saul Goodman) is certainly one hell of an actor to boot, but what made Breaking Bad so compelling was the tension centered around the characters of Walter White, Jessie Pinkman, and guys like Gus Fring as time went on.

Perhaps Gilligan is having his own personal freakout recognizing that the show simply won’t work without the ingredients of what made Breaking Bad so iconic? Time will tell! Thanks for reading.
