Ed Helms: The New Frank Drebin!

Paramount Pictures has given the green light to reboot The Naked Gun film franchise that was made famous by the late, great Leslie Nielsen. And with that, Ed Helms has been chosen to play Nielsen’s role of Lt. Frank Drebin.

The studio has also chosen a pair of writers to pen this revamped and reloaded version of the series with Thomas R. Lennon, and R. Ben Garant, better known for writing Night at the Museum, and the Reno 911 TV series, to write the screenplay.

Overall, I’m just asking myself why? Why another reboot? Why can’t Hollywood just go a different direction? If nothing else, why not just write a movie about another police detective, and give it an original name, with some distinctive elements to it? At the end of the day I think there’s some films or film franchises that should be left alone, and this is one of them.

Somewhere, Leslie Nielsen is either frowning or smiling over this news. Either way, with all due respect to Mr. Helms, I don’t expect him to hold a candle to the iconic work that Nielsen did in the original films.
