Fashion: Artwork turned Fashion-Sixties Hot Rod Fashion is Back!

 Stroker McGurk

The artwork of famed Hot Rod Magazine cartoonist Tom Medley — creator of the popular Stroker McGurk cartoon character that appeared in HRM from 1948 through the mid-1950s — has inspired a new collection of apparel from Badcock Jones, a boutique creator of contemporary casual apparel and accessories, announced Badcock Jones founder Seth Harris.
Six cartoon designs — some culled from deep inside the Medley archive — are featured on a variety of T-shirts, from simple short-sleeve black, grey, or white tees to black-white 3/4 sleeve baseball shirts. The six designs include Stroker McGurk, the original Go-Kart logo (famed rock ‘n’ roller Iggy Pop was known to don a Go-Kart shirt during performances), the San Fernando Valley Kart Club, Cummins Engineering, Hall-Craft Equipment, and the Comet East African Safari. All were created by Medley in the 1950s and 1960s.

Tom Medley was one of Hot Rod Magazine’s original staff members, starting on the second issue in 1948. He created cartoons and photography that chronicled America’s post WWII car culture. Character Stroker McGurk put a whimsical wink on a hot rodding’s then-outlaw image. Medley’s artistry and innovation left an indelible mark on this period, a personal interpretation of a time when America’s potential was unlimited, free of cynicism, full of promise. Medley, known as hot rodding’s original nice guy, proved just how unlimited that potential could be. Sadly, Medley passed away last year at age 93. All Badcock Jones T-shirts feature super-soft sheer jersey construction (100% cotton), unisex sizing (although women may prefer to order one size smaller), a distressed print for a vintage look, and made-in-USA construction. In short, Badcock Jones T-shirts deliver the feel and durability of a vintage T-shirt that feels like you’ve owned it for years the moment you put it on.
