iPhone-shot Arthouse Crime Drama ‘Ex-Con: Redemption’ Releasing on VOD JULY 10.

A debut feature Ex-Con: Redemption directed by a London-based visual artist Anthony Z James is releasing on VOD streaming platforms and becomes available in the USA on Friday 10th July.

The film was set to be released in the cinemas this May, but due to Covid-19 all screenings were cancelled.

This gritty and lyrical London-set crime drama follows a reformed gangster on the first day of freedom as he must reconnect with an estranged wife and conflicted son before his violent past catches up with them. The film tackles the complicated father-son relationship, toxic masculinity and burden of responsibility.

Initially released as Ghost in the UK earlier this year, the film received many positive reviews from the critics.

Ex-Con: Redemption was entirely shot on an iPhone with a specially adapted anamorphic cinema lens, which was previously used by the renowned filmmakers Steven Soderbergh and Sean Baker on their ground-breaking ventures into shooting movies on a smartphone, such as Tangerine, Unsane and High Flying Bird. ‘Since losing my father a few years ago, I was compelled to tell a story about my relationship with him through a lens of a crime drama – the kind of movie he loved the most.’ – Anthony Z James, writer and director .

After graduating the University of Westminster BA (Hons) Film Production in 2011 Anthony established himself as an illustrator and storyboard artist collaborating with visionary directors, including Jonathan Glazer, Kathryn Bigelow, Michel Gondry, John Hillcoat, Andrew Douglas, Mario Testino and Tarsem Singh. Since 2004 Anthony directed over a dozen shorts, such as The Roof (2014), which premiered at Raindance and got picked up for distribution by Shorts International, as well as Day One (2016), Official Selection at Miami Independent Film Festival and Winner at Canada Shorts, which was developed into his debut feature.
The key cast includes Anthony Mark Streeter, Nathan Hamilton, Russell Barnett and Emmy Happisburgh.
