JJ Abrams out, Rian Johnson in for Star Wars episodes 8, 9

Deadline.com and Variety are now reporting Disney will announce writer/director Rian Johnson as the guy who will take over for JJ Abrams once he’s finished directing Star Wars:Episode 7. Some of you may remember that Johnson directed the Sci-fi film “Looper” a few years ago, and also directed several episodes of Breaking Bad.

Now, normally I’d go about my business with a story like this, but has it dawned on anyone as to why suddenly Abrams will not be coming back for Episodes 8 and 9? Was this strictly apart of Disney’s master plan to swap out directors for remaining episodes of this new trilogy, or did something happen to cause a rift between Abrams and Disney execs?

Moreover, this news is leaking barely a week removed from when actor Harrison Ford‘s leg was all but crushed on set by an hydraulic door that will force the iconic actor out of commission for at least 8 weeks while Abrams continues to shoot other scenes around his absence. I don’t know about you fans, but something doesn’t seem right to me. It was already known that Abrams, to his credit, is a big-time family man, and having to shoot the film overseas in London was a sticking point that ultimately almost had him pass on the job. But I’m starting to wonder if the insane accident that occurred to arguably the biggest star of his film, Ford, didn’t make him tell Disney “Thanks, but no thanks” on staying onto direct at least one more episode. Additionally, could Disney’s insistence that the film be released by December, 2015, causing one heck of a frantic shooting pace, and unrealistic production schedule, also have worn thin with Abrams?

Indeed these are questions worth asking, and I’ll be curious to see if any major media outlets do press Disney for those answers after the official announcement to Johnson’s taking over for Abrams is made in the near future. Nuff said.
