It was a delight to be able to speak with Kayla Wallace about her starring role in ‘Undercover Cheerleader’. Kayla is from Vancouver and studied at the Canadian College of Performing Arts.
What drew you to the role of Autumn?
Kayla Wallace. I thought the script was well-written. It was engaging and kept you on your toes. You never know what is going to happen next. I have a dance background and I thought it would be fun to do a cheerleading movie. It was a blast!
What is the ‘cruel culture’ of cheerleading?
Kayla Wallace. The culture for cheerleading at this high school may exist in real life. There are eating and diet restrictions and the competition is fierce. The cheerleading coach is played by Sarah-Jane Redmond and she is cutthroat, similar to J.K. Simmons in Whiplash, always pushing the girls to be better.
Who is the Antagonist?
Kayla Wallace. There are actually multiple Antagonist’s. I want to leave that as a surprise.
What actors inspire you?
Kayla Wallace. I love Nicole Kidman. To experience a career like that would be a dream come true. I also admire Rachel McAdams and Dakota Johnson. I like the genuineness and authenticity of their performances. I also think Ryan Reynolds is fantastic. He is so funny!
Have you ever considered doing comedy?
Kayla Wallace. I don’t think I would want to do stand-up, but I would love to do a Rom-Com, or something like ‘The Mindy Project’( I can’t get enough and watch all the re-runs), ‘The Office’ or of course ‘Friends’. Currently, I am trying to write comedy and I’m taking improv classes.
What about doing a musical?
Kayla Wallace. My background is musical theater. I did perform in ‘Footloose’ when I was in school. I play my piano and sing to relax. I enjoy listening to musical soundtracks. I also enjoy pop and rock songs, like the music of Adele.
What’s next for Kayla Wallace?
Kayla Wallace. I’m working on the 7th season of Hallmark’s ‘When Calls the Heart’. It is a heartfelt show for any age.
Do you support any charities?
Kayla Wallace. I did do some work for the Kidney Foundation. I love animals. I really want to do some volunteering for the ASPCA.
Anything else you would like to say about ‘Undercover Cheerleader’?
Kayla Wallace. Yes. I’d like to mention how great the cast was. We all clicked right away and it was as if we had been friends forever. Maddie Phillips, Andre Anthony and the rest of the cast spent our free time hanging out and having fun. And Danny J. Boyle, the director. He made everyone comfortable and at ease. I miss him!
