Damon Runyan Talks ‘Cheerleader Escort’ Premiering Saturday, September 14 – 8pm PST/EST on LIFETIME TV

Alexandra Beaton, Cynthia Preston and Damon Runyan star in the Thriller.

When college freshman Cassie (Alexandra Beaton, The Next Step) earns a spot on the cheerleading squad, she is overjoyed about the new friendships, status, and access to social events that come along with being on the team. When she meets Terry (Damon Runyan, Gangland Undercover), the charismatic President of the Alumni Association, at an event, Cassie finds herself falling for this older man despite their age difference. Terry even helps her out by paying part of her tuition when she falls on hard times. But all is not as it seems when Cassie finds out that members of the team moonlight as escorts with rich alumni, and that the man she’s falling in love with is part of that group. When a friend from the team becomes pregnant and ends up dead under mysterious circumstances, Cassie vows that nothing will stop her from exposing the dark world that surrounds her. The Cheerleader Escort also stars Cynthia Preston (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan).

Damon Runyan

Thanks, Damon Runyan for taking time to speak with me about The Cheerleader Escort.

In today’s climate, it is very courageous to tale a role as a male predator!

Damon Runyan. I know! When producer Pierre David first offered me the part, the first thing he said was “Don’t judge the character!” I’m glad I took his advice because the role was challenging and I realized that the character is not so much a predator, as a guy struggling with not wanting to give up his youth. That changed my insight of the character from disdain to relatable.

I did get to see a preview of the show and Alexandra Beaton’s character takes charge.

Damon Runyan. That a good point. She goes through a self-empowerment process which is very positive.

Do you struggle with the idea of getting older?

Damon Runyan. I’m a new dad! My wife and I recently had our first child, a baby girl – RUBY SIMONE. I’m struggling with the idea of moving from Nannyshare into Daycare! It’s like an existential crisis!

How do you feel about the ‘Me Too’ movement?

Damon Runyan. I do think there is a lack of the male voice. The nature of change contains combustibility, but we need to reimagine men with heart and vulnerability.  I think in the evolution of humanity, it’s advantageous to think the best of other people.

What was it like to film the love scenes?

Damon Runyan. It was challenging. In the film Alexandra, who is actually in her early twenties, plays a nineteen-year-old girl. We filmed two versions. One for the North American market and one for the European. The European version has only implied sexuality.

Can you tell me a little about your TV series ‘Dudes’?

Damon Runyan. It’s a Dark Comedy similar to Girls or Sex and the City, only from a male viewpoint. They are late in life Dad’s challenged by a new existence and on the other side how that new existence gives so much meaning to their lives. It’s a humorous take on being vulnerable. I’m producing it independently as a web-series.

Don’t miss ‘Cheerleader Escort’, premiering this Saturday, September 14th at 8pm PST/EST on LIFETIME TV!
