Matt Weiner knows how to appreciate success. He dealt with rejection for years before getting his big break writing for ‘The Sopranos‘. Along the way he began the groundwork for the pilot of the show that made his career,  MAD MEN.

Inquiring about his notorious secrecy about the season 6  MAD MEN plot Matt replied, “I’m not trying to tease people, I just don’t want viewers to know what’s coming because that’s what keeps people interested. At the beginning of a season I’m starting a whole new story, and I want people to always feel that their watching the best season ever”.

When does Matt think the end of MAD MEN is coming? “I am very aware that the end is coming, I just don’t know when. I am always aspiring to keep it new and fresh without doing anything crazy”.

What inspired Matt to become a writer? “I had a lot of support from my parents. They loved and admired writers. We had a big poster of Ernest Hemingway in our hallway. That mattered to me, that they thought writing could be a heroic profession and a writer could make a valuable contribution. I was a terrible student, but I gave a speech I wrote at my high school graduation and one of the Dad’s complimented me, saying I could be a TV writer. It wasn’t just any Dad, it was Alan Burns who created ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show‘. That gave me confidence”.

What have you learned about having a huge hit? “I’d like to remember to give more praise to all the people that contribute to the success of the show. To give more of the glory to my producers and co-writers who are so dedicated and supportive. I want to share the wealth”.
