Priscilla Queen of the Desert Review

I’m in New York!! While here I couldn’t leave without seeing a Broadway show. I love me a good musical. I heard about Priscilla on TV before I came to the East Coast. The show is produced by the one and only Bette Midler. So right there I was sold.

I came to NY to visit my cousin from Australia. Priscilla is a show based in Australia so it was a perfect fit. We were so excited to go. Little did we know the show was still in previews and had it’s opening night the next night. Kind of a bummer we missed the big stars but it was still good.

The show is based on the 1994 cult film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. It premiered in 2006 in in Sydney and became a hit. The show is about 3 drag queens that go on a bus trip across the desert to perform their own show. But Tick, (Will Swenson) doesn’t tell them he is also going to meet his son for the first time.

It is a great show filled with outstanding musical numbers. The songs are songs we all know and get the audience moving. It is literally one hit song after another. The audience was going crazy. We were towards the top of the house but could still see everything. The cast interacts with the audience and brings you right in the whole time. The downside was it was lacking a bit of a story line. I wished there would have been more to it. My cousin said the movie was very heartfelt and more story to it. There were some touching moments but they jumped quickly. It seemed the show went by so fast.

The actors had so many costume changes. I don’t think I have that many clothes in my closet. The shoes, oh the shoes, I don’t know how they did it. I can barely walk in heels. It was pretty funny to see the muscular guys in heels and dresses but they pull it off.

All in all I would definitely recommend the show. It is a lot of fun. It reminded me a bit of Mama Mia. You will be clapping and singing along to the show.
