Star Trek to Return as a TV series!!!

CBS Television Studios announced this morning that “Star Trek” will be returning as a TV series that will initially premiere on Network TV, but then transition to their digital on demand/streaming service “CBS ALL ACCESS”.

January 2017 is the firm date that CBS has set for the premiere episode that will apparently feature new characters, and have no relation to the current crop of feature films of the past 6 years.

My hope is that they set this new series somewhere within the Star Trek: The Next Generation timeline so it gives them the option to showcase some of those characters many have wanted to see again since the failed Star Trek Nemesis film from 2002. Who wouldn’t want to see Riker, Worf, and maybe even Picard show up for a few episodes or more? That’s a no brainer!!

As far as who’s in charge, Alex Kurtzman will executive produce, and has already dipped into the Trek pond with his producing and writing credits for the Trek features Star Trek (2009), and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013).

In the end, for Trekkies, this must be exciting news, however, there seems to be a huge conglomerate of bitter Trekkies out there who tend to spew nothing but hate for the recent movies. So when they recognize that Kurtzman is the top dog in charge of producing a new series I can only help but wonder if that will leave a bad taste in their mouths? Perhaps some Romulan Ale will ease their reservations?? Time will tell:)

And for nostalgia’s sake, take a look at what was the original trailer for Star Trek: The Next Generation when it was about to air in syndication back in 1987:
