Halloween Nostalgia- Friday the 13th the Video Game

If you were a kid in the 1980s and had a Nintendo Entertainment System, then there’s a good bet you at least knew of a “Friday the 13th The Video Game” for Nintendo. The question is, did you ever get the chance to give it a whirl?

Don’t ask me how I was able to rent this game as a 9 year old, but the curiosity after having stayed up uber-late to catch some of the Friday the 13th feature films made it inevitable I would get my hands on a copy of this. And in the end, it creeped me out to no end.

If my memory serves me correct, the goal of the game was to free little kids who were staying at Camp Crystal Lake so that Jason Voorhies didn’t get to them first. Add to it, the occasional bat-shit crazy run in with Jason himself and it made for an angst-ridden, and edgy experience playing this at such a young age. Even the music was spot on for creating a mood that made you feel as if at any moment Jason could appear and whoop your ass.

That being said, I remember this being one of the hardest games I ever played as a kid and I’m not sure the game designers made it to be beatable, but more so to just give you nightmares. Regardless, have any of you ever beaten this game? Did you stay up late with friends and take turns to see who could last the longest?

As a nice final dose of nostalgia, below you’ll find one long clip of the game in action to hopefully bring back some fond memories of your childhood…. Happy Halloween!!
