OSCAR LETTERS

BRUCE

At 78 yrs. old Hollywood character actor Bruce Dern has earned his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor in the film Nebraska.

Bruce Dern isn’t only the father of actress Laura Dern, he has starred in over 200 films and TV shows since he began acting 60 years ago, and can boast that his Godmother was former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Dern is known for playing quirky roles and bad guys. In 1978 he was nominated for a Best Supporting role in the acclaimed Coming Home, which earned Jon Voight his Best Actor Oscar, but lost to Christopher Walken’s performance in The Deer Hunter.  Bruce starred in the 1974 adaptation of the Great Gatsby and most recently in  Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.

Bruce Dern has already won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor for playing Woody Grant in Alexander Payne’s Nebraska. Woody is a cantankerous, bitter and angry man who mistakenly thinks he has won the lottery and insists on going to  Lincoln, Nebraska to pick up the money in person, forcing his son (played by SNL’s Will Forte) to drive him. Nebraska has been nominated for 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and 83 year old June Squibb for Best Supporting Actress.

Tune in to the Academy Awards on Sunday evening, March 2 on ABC hosted by Ellen DeGeneres to see if Bruce brings home his first Oscar.
