Breaking Bad Spinoff: Better Call Saul (Prequel or Sequel?)

For those of us who are having Breaking Bad withdrawals, the good news is that the potential spin-off series, currently called Better Call Saul, which would return actor Bob Odenkirk to his memorable role of Saul Goodman, is still on course for being made.

The question remains though, will this series be a prequel, set before the events of the iconic Breaking Bad series, or a sequel of sorts. Very recently, Bob Odenkirk was quoted in an IGN article to relay the thoughts on this up in the air question: Well, I’ve talked to Vince [Gilligan] and Peter [Gould], who are writing and creating the series, about this and I’ve said that a lot of people do want to see what happens to next to Saul. So, I don’t know what they’re going to do. I know they’ve talked about prequel, but they’ve also talked to me about sequel, and they’ve also talked to me about a mix of prequel and sequel.

Later, he elaborated a little more on if this series will have some familiar faces from Breaking Bad or go in an entirely new direction: Oh my God, I told Peter and Vince, right away I said, ‘Look man, let us make this fresh for everyone.’ So that right away, in the first five minutes, every viewer goes, ‘Oh, this isn’t Breaking Bad, this is its own thing.’ And I think they feel the same exact way. There might be a cameo here or there, but I don’t know. We’re going to do a new show.

So there you have it, for now, it sounds like the creator and writers could keep it in a separate domain from that of Walter White and co. or it may pepper in some of the characters of that series as well. I’m intrigued, as I’m sure all of you are, that there’s even going to be a spin-off to begin with. Time will tell if it can stand out from the legacy that is Breaking Bad.
